It is an elongated, cylindrical stem with two pointy ends. Its use is unclear. Similarly shaped objects from other excavations, although bigger in size, are often mentioned as carpentry drills.
The “drill” was placed inside a skyphos (Μ 3496) with two similar ones (Μ 3498 β, Μ 3498 γ), six “handles” (Μ 3497 α, Μ 3497 β , Μ 3497 γ, Μ 3497 δ, Μ 3497 ε, Μ 3497 στ) and a “blade” (Μ 3499).
The skyphos had been deposited in a small pit opened below the earthen floor of an area not fully traced. Although the concealment was intentional, the reasons behind it are unknown. Perhaps it constitutes an early example of a foundation ritual, one of the many “building deposits” that were discovered in the Makrygiannis plot or perhaps it was a hiding spot the owner chose for safekeeping his valuable objects in times of imminent danger.
